A 40-year-old Portage la Prairie man was taken to hospital by air ambulance and remains in critical condition after an assault Friday night, Manitoba RCMP say.

A 40-year-old Portage la Prairie man was taken to hospital by air ambulance and remains in critical condition after an assault Friday night, Manitoba RCMP say.

Pembina Valley RCMP were called to a home in the village of Somerset, about 65 kilometres southwest of Portage la Prairie, with a report of a serious assault outside the home around 10:45 p.m. Friday.

The 40-year-old was found with life-threatening injuries and taken by STARS air ambulance to hospital, where he remained in critical condition as of early Saturday afternoon, an RCMP spokesperson told CBC via email.

STARS confirmed in an email it took the patient to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg in serious condition.

A 33-year-old man was arrested and is in police custody, the RCMP spokesperson said. He did not say whether any charges have been laid, but said the investigation is continuing.
