A woman in her 50s has died in hospital after she was struck by a dump truck in Mississauga on Thursday, Peel Regional Police say.

The collision happened in the intersection of Eglinton Avenue West and Erin Mills Parkway, according to Const. Tyler Bell, spokesperson for Peel police. Officers were called to the area at about 1:15 p.m.

Bell said the woman was walking eastbound across the intersection at a crosswalk, when she was hit by the dump truck headed north.

The woman was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The driver, meanwhile, remained on the scene. There's no word on charges.

"This is a very large intersection with multiple lanes in each direction — north, south, east and west," Bell said.

"I mean, it's no stranger to collisions here, typically not with pedestrians. But it is a very busy intersection with a high volume of both vehicular and pedestrian traffic."

Peel police's major collision bureau was on scene on Thursday to reconstruct the crash.

Anyone who was driving in the area at the time of the collision and who has dashboard camera video of the incident is being asked to contact police.
