A 27-year-old man has been charged with mischief over $5,000, two counts of assaulting a police officer and assault in relation to an incident at a KFC location in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg police were called to the restaurant on Sherbrook Street and Notre Dame Avenue around 7:45 p.m. on Friday for a report of a man who was causing a disturbance and destroying property, a news release said on Sunday.

A video circulating on Facebook recorded a part of the incident from a table inside the restaurant. In the clip, a man in front of the restaurant counter is seen knocking its contents onto the floor and flipping a small drinks fridge.

At least four staff members are visible standing behind the counter with one person speaking on a phone. Store signage and a chair were also flipped onto the floor near the counter.

Other video clips show the man walking behind the counter before hiding himself from the camera's view. In another video posted to social media, five Winnipeg police officers are seen walking into the kitchen.

The man starts throwing objects at them and is then hit with a stun gun by police, the video appears to show.

A police officer then asks approximately five patrons to leave the premises for the time being.

CBC spoke to a staff member who said the man had asked if he could use the phone to call his mom. The staff member told him they could make the call on his behalf and asked for the number which appeared to upset him, the employee said.

Police said the man threw various objects at a 39-year-old staff member and was not co-operative during his arrest. The man was taken into police custody and was later released on an undertaking.

The restaurant staff and the man did not require medical attention, police said.
