A Winnipeg man has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault after an 83-year-old woman was attacked on the street in the Centennial neighbourhood.

Investigators learned the woman was walking with the assistance of a walker on William Avenue between Princess and Ellen streets when she was physically assaulted by a man on Feb. 25 around 12:45 p.m., police said in a news release on Wednesday.

The family of the woman, identified as Victoria Comeau, spoke at a news conference last week hosted by the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs and said she was on her way to buy milk when she was punched in the back of the head and face, and was repeatedly kicked to the ground.

Comeau suffered internal bleeding and other serious injuries, including a shattered pelvis, and was taken to hospital after the incident, her family said. She is expected to undergo a lengthy rehabilitation process, police said.

A witness intervened and the attacker fled the scene, police said. Comeau's belongings, including her walker and purse were recovered.

Police arrested a 27-year-old man at a residence on Ross Avenue between Princess and Ellen streets on Tuesday around 9:15 a.m.

The man has been charged with aggravated assault and two counts of failing to comply with conditions of a release order, police said.

He was detained in custody.
