Joseph Schneider Haus in Kitchener received $20,000 in federal funding on Friday that will go towards a much needed upgrade to the museum's roof.

"The upgrade will safeguard this national historic site and its collection, protecting and allowing for the ongoing preservation of local Germanic folk art and pieces of national significance," Adèle Hempel, manager and curator of the Waterloo Region Museum and Historic Sites, said in a release.

The local landmark was built in 1816 and is the oldest remaining structure in Kitchener. It was restored, furnished and opened as a living history museum in 1981.

The funding project is one of more than 350 Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Programs that allow for upgrades in community facilities such as parks, trails, cultural and community centres.

"The renovations to the Joseph Schneider Haus Museum will ensure that members of our community will be able to enjoy this historical and cultural landmark for years to come," said Raj Saini, MP for Kitchener Centre.
