More than 500 self-portraits of Waterloovians in new exhibition

Throughout 2016, Waterloovians had the chance to create their own self-portraits during workshops and public activities. Now 500 of those self-portraits are on display.

We Are Waterloo exhibit opens on January 17 and runs to June 9

Throughout 2016, Waterloovians had the chance to create their own self-portraits during workshops and public activities.

Now, more than 500 of those self portraits are the subject of a new exhibition at the City of Waterloo Museum in Conestoga Mall.

The exhibition opens on January 17, and features self-portraits in a range of styles, everything from abstract to cartoon-style to yarn.

Here's a sneak peek:

Residents created the portraits during more than 20 public workshops and activities led by local artists, and were encouraged to create their portraits in a number of different styles, from abstract representations to yarn art. (Andrea Bellemare/CBC)
The exhibition also features quotes, interspersed between the portraits. All the portraits were created on the same size paper, but many have frames around them, added later by the City of Waterloo Museum. (Andrea Bellemare/CBC)
The Artists who led the self-portrait classes for the We Are Waterloo exhibit also did their own self portraits, which are displayed in a separate section of the exhibition. (Andrea Bellemare/CBC)
