Fort Saskatchewan RCMP have charged a substitute educational assistant with sexual offences involving a student.

Police say Emily Toomey, 22, is charged with sexual interference and sexual assault. The offences involve a student at SouthPointe School, a kindergarten-to-Grade 9 school in Fort Saskatchewan, Alta.

There is no indication of more victims, police added.

Toomey was taken before a judge and released from custody with conditions. Her next court appearance is scheduled for May 8 at the Alberta Court of Justice in Fort Saskatchewan, a city about 30 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.

Elk Island Public Schools, the school district of which SouthPointe School is a part, provided CBC News with a letter it sent to parents.

The letter states that Toomey worked at a number of schools in the district during her employment. But the division is terminating Toomey's casual position and she is now prohibited from being on any Elk Island Public School property.

Division leaders and trustees are distressed about the situation, because the safety of students and staff is paramount, the letter says.

The division says it's co-operating fully with the RCMP. But, given the matter is under investigation, will not provide further details or comments.
