Driver taken to hospital, SIU investigating, after Kingsville traffic stop

The Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate, OPP say, after a Thursday traffic stop resulted in an injury to a driver.

The traffic stop took place around 1:40 a.m. Thursday, OPP say

Ontario's police watchdog is investigating, OPP say, after a Thursday traffic stop resulted in an injury to a driver.

Essex County OPP said that around 1:40 a.m. Thursday morning officers conducted a traffic stop on Remark Drive in Kingsville.

"During the traffic stop, an incident occurred resulting in the driver sustaining an injury," police said in a statement Thursday afternoon.

Both the driver and OPP officer were assessed and the driver was taken to hospital by paramedics.

Police say the Special Investigations Unit was notified and the agency, which investigates incidents involving police officers that result in death or serious injury, has invoked its mandate.

Police declined further comment, but said the investigation into the initial traffic stop remains ongoing.
