Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after a man was sent to hospital following an arrest in east London early Monday morning.

At around 3 a.m., a London police officer tried to stop a vehicle near Marconi Boulevard and Noel Avenue, police said, when the driver fled by foot.

Additional officers and the canine unit arrived, and the suspect was found by the dog. He sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries during the interaction, police said, and was sent to hospital.

As a result, Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was called to investigate the incident.

The SIU is an independent agency that investigates actions of the police that result in serious injury, death, the discharge of a firearm or sexual assault allegations in Ontario.
