A Toronto Hydro worker has died after a possible electrocution overnight Thursday near the city's harbourfront, emergency crews said.

Fire crews were called to the area of Rees Street and Queens Quay W. around 1:50 a.m. for reports of an industrial accident.

A man was in a vault and was possibly electrocuted, Toronto Fire said. He was taken out by firefighters and power was shut off in the vault, they said.

The worker was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, but he later died, police said in a post on X Friday morning.

The victim is a man in his 30s, police said. Another person sustained non-life threatening injuries, they said.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Labour said it was reported that the worker came into contact with live wires. Investigators with the ministry are currently on scene looking into the incident, the spokesperson said.

The power outage in the area that began around 1:54 a.m. has yet to be resolved, the Toronto Hydro website shows.

Toronto Hydro spokesperson Lauren Harris said the incident happened while crews were completing planned maintenance inside a vault.

"Toronto Hydro is fully cooperating with the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development and we are focused on supporting the worker's family and our employees through this difficult time," she said in an email to CBC Toronto.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow said she was "heartbroken" about the incident in a post on X on Friday.

"I extend my heartfelt condolences to their family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time," she wrote.
