The first homicide of 2025 in Saskatoon happened at a mining supply company in the city's north end and involved two co-workers.

Troy Francis Leclair, 53, appeared in provincial court Wednesday morning charged with first-degree murder in the death of 23-year-old Alfred Nyarko Okyere.

In a news release, police said they were called to the business around 8 p.m. CST on Monday.

"Patrol officers responded to the report of an injured person at a business in the 3900 block of Millar Avenue. Upon arrival, Police located a 23-year-old male victim suffering from stab wounds," the release said.

"He was transported to hospital where he was pronounced deceased."

Police did not identify the accused, the victim or the business.

Staff at DSI Underground Canada Ltd., at 3919 Millar Ave., said any questions should be referred to the company's legal department.

Close to a dozen of Okyere's family and friends were in court Wednesday for Leclair's court appearance.

Judge Jane Wootten remanded Leclair until his next appearance, scheduled for Jan. 29. Prosecutor Paul Goldstein successfully requested an order prohibiting Leclair from contacting a list of "witnesses, employees and possible family members."

There were 16 homicides in the city last year.
