Police have arrested a 25-year-old man as part of an ongoing investigation into a September fire that destroyed a church in Loon Lake, Sask.

On Dec. 7 officers in Loon Lake, a community about 150 km northwest of North Battleford, arrested the man from Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation.

The suspect is charged with one count of arson, and was also found to be breaching a conditional sentence order.

He first appeared in Meadow Lake Provincial Court on Dec. 9.

On Sept. 28, Loon Lake RCMP first responded to reports of a fire in the community. By the time they had arrived the church, which was reportedly built in 1939, was fully engulfed and was destroyed.

The church had been empty at the time and no injuries were reported to police. The fire was determined to be suspicious.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
