A 41-year-old man charged with theft under and over $5,000 along with breaking into business
A Winnipeg man, who's been accused of stealing a truck from an autobody shop in the North End along with a cash register from a car wash, faces multiple charges of theft.
The Winnipeg police's major crimes unit learned that a man stole a 2021 Ford Transit 350 valued at approximately $28,000 from an autobody shop on Arlington Street between William and Logan Avenues sometime between Thursday and Friday, police said in a news release on Sunday.
Around 4 a.m. on Friday, police say the man went to a car wash on Watson Street where he backed the stolen truck into the glass front entry door before going inside the building.
Once inside, the man allegedly stole the cash register containing money and gift cards before fleeing before police arrived at the scene.
Police recovered the stolen vehicle unoccupied on Austin Street North later that same morning, police said.
On Saturday at 3:30 a.m. north district patrol officers saw a man, who they believe matched the description of the man involved in the crime, walking in the area of McPhillips Street and Polson Avenue, police said.
Police stopped the accused, who quickly fled while speaking with officers. Police officers were able to arrest and detain the man, who they say is 41 years old.
He has been charged with break, enter and theft, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and failing to comply with a probation order.
