Hamilton told CBC News the recent birth of his son pushed him to add his name to the list.

"I realized from my research and my writing, maybe I can do more," he said.

He hopes to focus on issues like climate change, employment, homelessness and housing.

"I understand the needs of Cambridge residents where I'm a new dad ... I'm a millennial and I'm also in that group of people who are also struggling in terms of what am I going to do to secure full-time employment in the future," he said.

Also looking at the nomination for the Cambridge seat, are former Cambridge mayor Doug Craig and Waterloo Region District School board trustee, Cindy Watson, who are both seeking the nomination for the Conservatives.

Liberal MP Bryan May currently holds the seat in Cambridge and is seeking re-election.
