Guelph police are investigating after a man was struck and killed by a city bus in the downtown area.

The 49-year-old man from Fergus was crossing Wyndham Street when the bus driver drove into him.

Police say emergency services arrived on scene at 1:37 p.m at the intersection of Wyndham Street North and Carden Street.

They pulled him out alive from under the bus, but he died a short time later.

Tara Baker, chief administrative officer for the city, confirmed the man worked for the city.

"Out of respect for the employee's loved ones, we will not disclose their name at this time. Our focus is on supporting the employee's family, colleagues, and all city staff who have been impacted by this terrible event, including the transit operator," Baker said in a statement.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Guelph Police Traffic Unit.

Victim Services Wellington is also urging anyone who witnessed the collision to call their crisis line at 519-824-1212, ext. 7304, or the Here 24/7 Crisis Line at 1-844-HERE-247.
