Kate's 5 fun things to do in and around Waterloo region: April 25 to 27

The last weekend of April is a busy one with a pet expo, cultural celebrations and belated Earth Day events.

The end of April will bring cloud, sun, cool and warm temperatures — but the trees are budding and flowers are in bloom, so spring really feels like it's in the air.

With voting in the federal election taking place on Monday, if you need to read up on your local candidates, check out all of CBC K-W's coverage.

The Kitchener Rangers are in the Western Conference finals of the Ontario Hockey League and facing the London Knights. There are two weekend games (Friday and Sunday) but unfortunately they're both in London. The Rangers will host London Monday and Wednesday night at The Aud.

Find something new to read at the CFRU used book sale on Saturday and Sunday at First United Church in Waterloo.

There's also the Free to Read Book Sale held by the Guelph Tool Library at Old Quebec Street Shoppes in downtown Guelph on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Cambridge Symphony Orchestra is holding a performance on Saturday evening called Youthful Exuberance which will feature the Cambridge Youth Orchestra and Wilfrid Laurier University 2025 Concerto winners. That performance is at 7 p.m. at St Peter's Lutheran Church in Cambridge.

Paul Rempel is hosting a FUN-raiser for House of Friendship Sunday at 2 p.m. at Rockway Mennonite Church and the 
Waterloo County Teachers' Choir has a performance Sunday at 3 p.m. at Shantz Mennonite Church in Baden.

Community Eid potluck

Saturday, 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Ayr Islamic Centre will be hosting a community potluck this weekend. Anyone in the community can attend and are asked to bring a halal food dish.

Broken Film Festival

Friday, 7:30 p.m. start

Saturday, 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. start times

Silence, 46 Essex St., and artBar, 37 Quebec St., Guelph

This new film festival features a number of short films described as experimental, DIY and outsider films from around the world. 

Bengali New Year festival and fair

Saturday, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

St. Agatha Community Centre, 1791 Erbs Rd., St. Agatha

The Bangladesh Cultural Society, KWC hosts this fun event that's open to the community. The fair showcases traditional items and food. The festival includes performances and music.

K-W Pet Expo

Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Aud, Kitchener

Come for the pet vendors, stay for the shows like Super Dogs and the wiener dog races. There will also be celebrity pets, a creative grooming presentation and more.

Earth Day events

Earth Day was on Tuesday, but there are several events taking place this weekend to help people mark the day.

Friday:

Saturday:

  • 9 a.m to 2 p.m., plant trees in Guelph at 335 Laird Rd. Trees, shovels, mulch, pails, and planting instruction provided. People are encouraged to wear boots and gloves and dress for the weather.
  • 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Clean Ayr Project is hosting an event at Centennial Park in downtown Ayr. There will crafts for kids, free pollinator plants (while supplies last), live raptor and birds of prey demonstrations, information on attracting birds to the garden, community clean-ups, an e-waste drop off and a clothing and household goods drop-off.
  • 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Max Becker Common in the Williamsburg neighbourhood of Kitchener, there will be a park clean up plus fun family activities.
  • 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., it's Earth Day at the Idea Exchange in Preston. There will be green activities, crafts, and seeds to take home.
  • 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday there's Earth Day Crafternoons at Schneider Haus in Kitchener.
