Month-long strike by outside workers in Waterloo region ends after pickets snarl morning commute

A month-long strike by outside workers has come to an end Friday, after an agreement with the Region of Waterloo was ratified. Friday morning worker were still picketing in front of Grand River Transit facilities in Waterloo and Cambridge, leading to delays in bus service. Regional Chair Karen Redman issued a statement saying it was causing "unnecessary chaos."

Two Wilmot Township councillors who were accused by colleagues of "bullying and harassing" behaviour have been cleared of code of conduct violations by the integrity commissioner. But the report noted there is tension among councillors and there is an unwillingness to "simply work with each other towards a common good."

The Region of Waterloo says it has presented striking workers with its "final offer" for a new contract. It comes the morning after outside workers who are on strike attended a regional council meeting Wednesday night and at one point, yelled the word "shame" at Regional Chair Karen Redman and other councillors. Roller derby teams in Ontario say they're an inclusive space for gender-diverse people. Now that a U.S. rule acknowledges only two genders, teams in Waterloo region, Guelph, Toronto, Hamilton and Ottawa are skipping going south of the border to compete, calling it unsafe for athletes.

Ex-University of Waterloo student sentenced to 11 years in prison for classroom stabbings

A former University of Waterloo, Ont., student who pleaded guilty to stabbing several people in a gender-studies class in 2023 was sentenced Monday to 11 years in prison. The judge said Geovanny Villalba-Aleman's actions were a "particularly grave hate crime," while the instructor wounded in the attack said "work to cultivate inclusive spaces of belonging continues."
