Guelph is the riding where Ontario's first Green MPP, Mike Schreiner, was elected and he hopes to continue to hold the seat after the Feb. 27 election.

The candidates in Guelph are (in alphabetical order by last name):

  • Robert Coole, Progressive Conservatives.
  • Carina Fraser, New Blue Party.
  • Mike Schreiner, Green (incumbent).
  • Cameron Spence, NDP.
  • Mustafa Zuberi, Liberal.

Robert Coole, the PC candidate, is also president of the local riding association. He is a semi-retired horse trainer, volunteers as a member of the Guelph Legion branch executive board and is part of the Ontario Trillium Foundation's grant review team for the region.

Carina Fraser, the New Blue candidate, has created a number of Catholic activity books for children.

Mike Schreiner is the incumbent and the leader of the Green Party of Ontario. He first won the seat in 2018 and then won again in 2022.

Cameron Spence, the NDP candidate, has worked at Polycon and later at Well.ca before he changed to marketing. His bio also says he's a lifelong renter.

Mustafa Zuberi, the Liberal candidate, works for the city as a customer service representative and was president of the Young Liberal Club at the University of Guelph when he attended.

Riding history

In recent history, Progressive Conservative Brenda Elliott held the seat in Guelph from 1995 to 1999 and again when the riding changed to Guelph-Wellington from 1999 to 2003.

In 2003, Liberal Liz Sandals beat Elliott. She was the MPP for Guelph-Wellington from 2003 until 2007 and for Guelph until her retirement in 2018.

Schreiner won his seat for the first time in 2018, then again in 2022.

Voters go to the polls on Feb. 27.
