Secular schooling to go ahead in Morinville

Secular education will be available to elementary students in Morinville, Alta. this fall.

All schools in Morinville are currently run by Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools, but earlier this year the neighbouring Sturgeon School Division agreed to offer non-religious education in the bedroom community north of Edmonton.

However, finding classroom space in the town has been difficult, said David Keohane, St. Albert schools superintendent.

This week the district reached a deal with the Town of Morinville for space in the new community cultural centre to temporarily house two classrooms for Grades 1 to 4.

"We've looked for every innovative solution that we possibly can," he said. "The space is an ideal one.

"These meeting rooms are as nice or better than any existing classroom that exists within the province."

Students will be moved into modular classrooms once they arrive in Morinville in December, said Keohane.

Pre-school and kindergarten students will attend classes in the parish hall.
