No building code changes after music fest tragedy

Alberta does not plan to toughen its building code for outdoor stages after a fatal stage collapse last summer at the Big Valley Jamboree country music festival.

Alberta does not plan to toughen its building code for outdoor stages as a result of the fatal collapse of the main platform last summer at the Big Valley Jamboree country music festival.

But the government says it will have inspectors on hand when the stage is built for next month's jamboree in Camrose, Alta., southeast of Edmonton.

A woman attending the festival died and 75 others were injured when a powerful wind ripped through the grounds with only a minute's warning and caused the main stage to crumble.

A report ordered by the province into what happened said the high winds far exceeded what the stage was required to handle.

The wreckage was so extensive that experts could not determine what actually caused it to collapse.

The Big Valley Jamboree starts July 29.
