3 dead, 2 severely injured in collision northeast of Edmonton

Three people are dead and two others are severely injured after a collision between a semi-trailer truck and a minivan near St. Paul on Tuesday afternoon.

Three people are dead and two others are severely injured after a collision between a semi-trailer truck and a minivan west of St. Paul , Alta., on Tuesday afternoon. 

RCMP said two people who died, a 29-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman, were from Saddle Lake Cree Nation. A 21-year-old woman from Edmonton was also killed.

The crash happened around 5 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 29 and Highway 36.

The scene is about 15 kilometres west of St. Paul, which is 200 kilometres northeast of Edmonton. 

RCMP said first responders attempted life-saving efforts but three people were declared dead on scene.

A police spokesperson told CBC News that two others in the minivan were airlifted by STARS to Edmonton in critical condition. 

Preliminary information suggests the westbound minivan did stop at the intersection, but then proceeded across the highway and was struck by the northbound semi truck, police said.
