A woman is dead and another is seriously injured after a collision involving three vehicles in Ajax on Wednesday, police say.

The incident happened around 1 p.m. near Kingston Road W. and Elizabeth Street, Durham police said in a news release Thursday.

A 78-year-old woman was driving a Honda HR-V east on Kingston Road W. when she crossed into the westbound lanes and struck a Dodge Journey head-on, police said. The Dodge was then struck by a Mazda Protege that was travelling west.

The woman was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead, police said.

The driver of the Dodge Journey, also a woman, remains in hospital in serious condition.

Police initially said that a man sustained life-threatening injuries in the crash, but confirmed Thursday the victim is a woman.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
