Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl makes triumphant return in custom-made Iron Throne
The 46-year-old frontman says he designed the contraption while on drugs for his injured leg
Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl made his triumphant return to the stage over the July Fourth weekend, rocking out with his broken leg while sitting in a custom-made throne.
Sporting a purple cast, the 46-year-old frontman told the crowd at the Washington D.C. concert that he wouldn't miss the show for the world, despite the injury he sustained falling off a stage in Sweden last month.
"I hit the ground so hard, I dislocated my ankle and that broke my leg," Grohl said, while recounting the incident to the crowd at Saturday's concert.
"I thought, 'Oh my God, we're going to have cancel shows! I don't want to cancel shows!'" explained Grohl, who says he was heavily medicated in hospital while he sketched the design for the throne.
Throne fit for a rocker
The contraption, built by the Foo Fighters' road crew, features lights and guitar necks splayed out from the seat, just like the swords on the Iron Throne from the fantasy series Game of Thrones.
"Because nothing's impossible in the Foo Fighters' world," Grohl exclaimed.
Saturday's gig at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium commemorated the 20th anniversary of the Foo Fighters' eponymous debut album.
It was the band's first since Grohl's injury forced them to cancel the remainder of their European tour.
Canadian fans can see Grohl and his throne perform live when the Foo's summer tour brings them to Canada later this week.
The band has back-to-back gigs scheduled Wednesday and Thursday in Toronto.
On Saturday, they'll hit the festival d'été de Québec in Quebec City.
