More than 8,500 customers remain without power after a powerful spring storm encrusted parts of central and eastern Ontario with ice more than a week ago.

Hydro One said in an update on Thursday that of those who are still without power, 6,539 involve secondary properties, such as cottages and trailers.

It is not safe to access many of these properties due to lake conditions, and restoration for these customers will continue over the coming weeks as conditions allow, Hydro One said.

Hydro One says 2,169 residential customers are still without power and each outage and incident affecting these customers has a crew assigned to it on Thursday.

The utility's outage map shows most of the customers without power are in the Bracebridge and Fenelon Falls areas.

More than a million homes and businesses in the provinces experienced outages due to the March 30 ice storm.

Hydro One says power has been restored to more than 99 per cent of customers and cleanup and restoration continue on Thursday, with the use of helicopters, boats and off-road vehicles due to favourable weather.

At this time in the restoration process, the utility says it has started to release out-of-province contractors and utilities providing assistance.
