Ontario Provincial Police say a 78-year-old man has died after being struck by a tree during ice storm cleanup near Peterborough.

Officers were called to a home in the Otonabee-South Monaghan Township on Monday for reports that someone had been hit by a tree, the OPP said in a news release on Tuesday.

The OPP said that according to a witness, the homeowner had asked for help clearing trees damaged from the ice storm.

"The two were both experienced in tree removal and had already felled four or five trees before the last one came down striking the one individual," the OPP said in a news release.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

On March 30, Ontario was hit by a major ice storm that left over a million homes and businesses experiencing outages.

In an update on Tuesday, Hydro One said about 32,000 customers remain without power.

Crews have restored power to more than 97 per cent of customers and continue to repair power lines that serve fewer customers, the utility said.

Hydro One says restoration is expected to be slower on Tuesday in areas with high winds, heavy snow, or flooding, such as Bracebridge, Penetang, Minden, and Fenelon Falls.

With clear weather expected on Wednesday, it says crews will be able to get their boats back in the water to help restoration.

Fenelon Falls has the highest number of customers without power, with about 11,102 customers affected.
