Man, 78, fatally struck by car while pushing his vehicle out of snowbank: police

A 78-year-old man is dead after being struck by a car while trying to push his own vehicle out of a snowbank in Markham Monday afternoon.

Collision happened Monday afternoon in Markham, York police say

York Regional Police have arrested and charged a Richmond Hill man, 47, after a suspected hate-motivated incident at a Markham mosque. The mosque is the second one to be attacked in a week.

A 78-year-old man is dead after being struck by a car while trying to push his own vehicle out of a snowbank in Markham Monday afternoon, York police say. 

York Regional Police say they responded to a call about a pedestrian who had been hit by a sedan at around 2:50 p.m. in the area of Reeser Road and Elgin Mills Road. 

"The victim was working to push his vehicle out of a snow bank at the time of the collision," York police said in a news release. 

Emergency services personnel attempted to save the man's life, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said. The man was from Toronto. 

The driver of the sedan remained at the scene of the collision. No other injuries were reported. 

York police are asking any witnesses who haven't spoken to police yet, as well as those who might have video footage of the area from around the time of the collision, to contact them.
