Teen charged after newspaper delivery driver carjacked in Bowmanville, police say
1 suspect still at large
A 17-year-old is facing multiple charges after a newspaper delivery driver was carjacked in Bowmanville on Saturday, Durham police say.
It happened around 4:45 a.m. in the area of Clarington Boulevard and Prince William Boulevard, investigators said in a news release issued Thursday.
Police say the driver was sitting in his vehicle at a delivery spot when two masked people — one carrying a firearm — approached and pulled him out the door. The suspects then took off in the stolen car, according to the news release. The victim wasn't hurt.
Officers later found the vehicle going west on Highway 401, before turning off at Westney Road in Ajax, where it slammed into a pole, police say.
Both people inside then ran off and, after a brief chase, officers were able to arrest one of the suspects, while the other got away, according to investigators.
A 17-year-old male from Ajax is now facing charges of robbery using a restricted firearm, disguise with intent, possessing property obtained by crime over $5,000 and obstructing a peace officer.
He was held for a bail hearing. Anyone with information or video footage of the incident is being asked to contact Durham police.
