Thunder Bay Police warn of door-to-door fraudsters
Elderly woman targeted in home repair scheme nearly lost life savings
Thunder Bay Police are issuing a warning about some door-to-door fraudsters, after three men nearly made off with an elderly woman's savings.
The men entered the woman's house on West Arthur Street and convinced the owner that she needed many repairs to her home, according to a police news release.
Two of the men went out and pretended to do the work. They then insisted the woman write them a cheque before they would leave.
The woman wrote a cheque for most of her savings, and the men left, police said.
However, when one of the men tried to cash the cheque, a bank employee found it suspicious and refused to cash it.
Police are reminding residents not to allow strangers inside their homes as con artists can pose as sales people, contractors or anything else that might get them inside.
