Teen charged with 2nd-degree murder in death of 50-year-old in Pikangikum First Nation

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said they have charged a 17-year-old with second-degree murder in connection with a "suspicious death" in Pikangikum First Nation a week ago.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said they have charged a 17-year-old with second-degree murder in connection with a "suspicious death" in Pikangikum First Nation, Ont., a week ago.

Police responded to a call on March 27 near Airport Road in Pikangikum First Nation for a man in medical distress who was pronounced deceased at the scene, said OPP in a news release.

The deceased is from Pikangikum First Nation.

The remote Ojibway community is about 500 kilometres northwest of Thunder Bay, Ont., in Treaty 5. It has a population of roughly 3,300 people.

The accused, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is being held in custody, said OPP, and is scheduled to appear in court in Kenora next week. 

No further details were provided on the victim or the accused.
