Ontario's police watchdog has invoked its mandate in Pikangikum First Nation following an incident Wednesday morning in the remote Ojibwe community.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a call for service just after 9 a.m. that day.

Officers arrested an individual, who reported an injury once they were in custody. They were sent to the nursing station for treatment, the SIU said in a news release issued Thursday morning.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm at a person.

About 3,300 people live in Pikangikum, which is located in Treaty 5 more than 500 kilometres northwest of Thunder Bay.

Another incident under investigation in Kenora

The SIU has also invoked its mandate in Kenora following a separate incident earlier this week.

Members of the Kenora OPP responded to a call for service around 5 a.m. on Sunday in the Main Street South area.

Officers arrested an individual. During the arrest, the person sustained injuries while exiting a residence, and was then transported to the hospital for treatment, the SIU said in a news release issued Thursday.

Updates on the status of all SIU cases can be found on the agency's website.
