Social media helped police identify Brittney Gargol as the young woman who was found fatally injured on Valley Road outside Saskatoon earlier this week.

Now, her friends are using social media to help the teen's family.

Julianne Alm created a page called "The Brittney Gargol Family Tragedy Fund" to help pay for funeral costs and offset her father's lost income as he takes time off to grieve.

"I can't imagine ever having to worry about money in such a tragic time as a parent," Alm said in an interview.

"My heart kind of went out to them and I'm going to do everything I can to make this just a little bit easier on them."

Police are still not saying how Gargol died, or how she came to be fatally injured in a ditch on a lonely stretch of road west of the city.

Meanwhile, her friends have taken to Facebook to mourn her death.

The 18-year-old had worked at Vern's Pizza and had a wide circle of friends from her job and school.

"I wish she didn't go the way she did; I wish I had a chance to say goodbye," wrote Nikki Allan on her Facebook page.
