Exhibit space named Remai Modern Art Gallery of Saskatchewan
Name is a nod to Fred Mendel, Remai gallery says
The Remai art gallery has a new name, and like a great work of art, it has meaning.
The downtown gallery will be called the Remai Modern Art Gallery of Saskatchewan. The gallery said it's a nod to the legacy of the Mendel family.
Fred Mendel, the namesake of the Mendel Art Gallery, donated works by Group of Seven artists in 1965. The iconic group of painters are credited with leading the modernist revolution in Canada.
The Remai replaces the aging Mendel gallery. The Remai part of the name is to recognize the projects major benefactor: The Frank and Ellen Remai Foundation, which donated $30 million — $15 million towards the building and $15 million for ongoing programming.
It took nine months to come to the name. The process included consultation with stakeholders, and community and business groups.
