P.E.I. police, coast guard launch recovery effort in Northumberland Strait
'We hope that the public also recognizes this is a sensitive situation'
The P.E.I. RCMP say they are working with the Canadian Coast Guard and other first responders as they try to recover the body of a person who jumped from the Confederation Bridge Friday morning.
"It's important that the public understand when they see emergency services in an area that they be aware of what has transpired and what efforts are going on here," Cpl. Gavin Moore told CBC News after RCMP posted a short notice to social media.
"This certainly is a sensitive matter and we are very respectful in our approach in something like this. We hope that the public also recognizes this is a sensitive situation."
P.E.I. RCMP began the search at around 3 a.m. Friday after the incident was reported to them. Moore said there were witnesses and bridge surveillance footage.
Police are working on land, in the air and on boats alongside the Coast Guard Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, P.E.I. Ground Search and Rescue and the New London Fire department.
RCMP ask that anyone with information relevant to the search contact police.
