P.E.I. harness racing crash sends driver to hospital
Bradley was sent to Prince County Hospital to get his knee checked out as a precaution
A harness driver had to be taken to the hospital after an accident Sunday at the Red Shores Raceway in Summerside.
During the open mares' final, Willow Warrior lost her footing and fell. She was being driven by Mark Bradley.
The horses were on the backstretch for the final time when Willow Warrior, in second place, broke her stride and crashed.
"She was going to the three quarter pole. She was right behind the lead horse, Rambling Lily, and she took a bad step and sadly enough she went down on the racetrack and the rest of the field had to go around her," said the horse's owner and trainer, Brendan Curran.
"It was a panicky moment. A lot of people ran to help," Curran said. "Everybody was safe and sound and attended to quickly, so it was a scary moment for all of our families, so hopefully we'll never have to see it again."
Bradley went to Prince County Hospital to get his knee checked out as a precautionary measure. He is now recovering from a strained ligament.
Willow Warrior and another horse that got caught up in the accident — Veronicavermillion — had minor scrapes and bruises. The other driver is reported to be fine.
Curran said accidents like this are rare.
"It doesn't happen very often. Everyone's safe out there, the equipment is safe, horses are safe, it's just a freak accident and that's exactly what it is: just an accident. We can't do anything to stop them but we just hope they never happen again," said Curran.
