Woman found dead at Barrhaven home, man charged with 1st-degree murder

Ottawa police have identified the victim as 60-year-old Brenda Rus. They've charged Robert Rus,61, with first-degree murder.

A woman was found dead inside home in the city's Barrhaven suburb Saturday evening and a man has been charged with first-degree murder, according to Ottawa police.

Police identified the victim as 60-year-old Brenda Rus of Ottawa on Sunday morning. They said she was found dead after officers were called to a home on Bentbrook Crescent. 

Paramedics received the call around 8:52 p.m. and responded with multiple units, said a spokesperson for the Ottawa Paramedic Service. 

They said they did not take anyone to hospital, referring all other questions to police.

Robert Rus, 61, of Ottawa was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He appeared in court Sunday morning, police said.

It is the fourth homicide investigation in the city since March 30 and the ninth since so far in 2025. Police have labelled the killing a femicide.

The scene is about 17 kilometres southwest of downtown Ottawa.
