A Saint Alphonse, N.S., man is facing multiple charges, including impaired driving causing death, after a crash that killed two people and injured another in the Municipality of Clare.

RCMP said in a news release that Vincent Alphonse Comeau, 34, was arrested Monday in connection with the Oct. 6 crash in Mavillette, N.S.

According to police, a car veered out of its lane on Highway 1 and collided with an SUV going in the opposite direction around 6:30 p.m. local time.

A 77-year-old Saint Alphonse woman who was a passenger in the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. A second passenger was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died, the release said.

The driver of the SUV sustained serious injuries in the crash.

The release said the driver of the car showed signs of alcohol impairment at the scene. He was taken to hospital where blood samples were taken.

Sgt. Jeff LeBlanc said it took two months for the charges to be laid because police were waiting for the results of the blood analysis from the RCMP's forensic lab.

RCMP said Comeau also faces charges of dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing bodily harm and impaired driving causing bodily harm.

He has been released from custody on conditions and is due Feb. 18 in Yarmouth provincial court.
