Two British Columbia men were killed in a crash early Thursday on the Trans-Canada Highway in New Brunswick.

RCMP were dispatched at about 1:20 a.m. to the scene of a single-vehicle crash near Coles Island, on a rural stretch of the highway about halfway between Moncton and Fredericton, police said.

The driver, a 26-year-old man, and his front-seat passenger, a 22-year-old man, died at the scene. Three passengers in the back seat were taken to hospital with "various injuries," an RCMP release said.

"The crash is believed to have occurred when the vehicle, travelling westbound, lost control and crossed the centre line before leaving the roadway and striking several trees."

Police did not name the victims or provide their hometowns. The investigation is still going on.
