Yukon government orders EFLO Energy to clean up spill
Spill occurred at dormant gas processing plant 240 kilometres east of Watson Lake
The Yukon government says there's been a "hydrocarbon spill" at EFLO Energy's dormant gas processing plant 240 kilometres east of Watson Lake.
It wasn't immediately clear what substance was spilled. There's also no word on the cause or how much was spilled.
In a news release, the government said it has issued cleanup orders under the Environment Act and the Oil and Gas Act with a deadline of noon Sunday. The spill was reported to Environment Yukon's spills hotline, the government said.
"The orders also require the company to fence the affected area, carry out clean-up and remediation, and ensure the plant and equipment are brought back into good working order," the release said.
The government is sending inspectors to the site, which is not accessible by road, to investigate over the weekend.
Yukon government spokeswoman Elaine Schiman said Saturday government inspectors were on site to investigate the size and nature of the spill.
Schiman said representatives from EFLO Energy have been in touch with officials with the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources.
Calls to EFLO Energy's head office in Houston weren't returned.
