Atsumi Yoshikubo wrote a suicide note before leaving Japan

Two Japanese media outlets have reported that Atsumi Yoshikubo wrote a suicide note before she left Japan for the Northwest Territories.

Yoshikubo disappeared in Yellowknife two weeks ago.

On Tuesday, RCMP called off the search and reported that she was presumed dead.

They also said Yoshikubo “arrived in Yellowknife with a plan to go into the wilderness alone and become a missing person.”

The police wouldn't give any details of the evidence they have that led them to that conclusion, but news networks in Japan have.

In an interview with Fuji TV two days ago, Yoshikubo’s brother, Kenji Yoshikubo, said the foreign ministry of Japan contacted him about a letter his sister had written.

“The letter was sent to [a] lady friend's house before she left Japan,” he said in Japanese.

Kenji said the ministry told him the letter suggested ​she was going to commit ​suicide.

But Kenji told reporters he questions why his sister bought a flight home and souvenirs if she intended to die.

He also said he’s not convinced that she’s dead, according to a translation by Yellowknifer Hideo Nagatani.

“I'm sure that she'll come back alive. Definitely come back alive,” Kenji said.

Kenji Yoshikubo also thanked the RCMP and ​people from Yellowknife who helped in the search for his sister.
