Wind, flash freeze warnings in effect for Newfoundland
A winter storm led to widespread closures in the City of Corner Brook Tuesday morning, as other parts of Newfoundland remain under wind and flash freeze warnings.
Most schools off the Avalon Peninsula are closed Tuesday morning as a storm system sweeps across Newfoundland and into Labrador.
Wind and flash freeze warnings are in effect for most of Newfoundland.
Power was knocked out for some residents in Bay L'Argent Tuesday afternoon due to severe winter weather, with power expected to be restored by 5 p.m.
On the Avalon Peninsula, Newfoundland Power estimates a number of power outages due to severe weather will be resolved by 4 p.m.
In Corner Brook, buses were pulled off the roads, as the Department of Transportation and Works warned drivers that routes on the west coast are snow covered with poor visibility.
The Burgeo Highway was also shut down.
Corner Brook city hall, provincial court and all other government offices closed for the morning, with some offices, including city hall, choosing to reopen for the afternoon.
High winds
According to Environment Canada, southeasterly winds on the Avalon Peninsula are expected to hit between 100 and 130 km/h during the morning and into the afternoon.
Environment Canada issued weather warnings for most parts of Newfoundland and Labrador Tuesday, including flash freeze and extreme cold warnings.
The College of the North Atlantic cancelled classes at many of its campuses across the province due to rough weather.
The temperatures will remain colder in Labrador, where blizzard warnings have been issued for Makkovik, L'Anse-au-Clair and Rigolet.
The extreme cold has affected schools across Labrador, with K-12 classes cancelled in Cartwright, while other schools will provide an update Tuesday afternoon.
