Newfoundland RCMP try to recover Igor victim

RCMP in Newfoundland confirmed Thursday that they are trying to recover the body of an 80-year-old man who was swept to sea from Random Island during Hurricane Igor.

RCMP in Newfoundland confirmed Thursday that they are trying to recover the body of an 80-year-old man who was swept to sea from Random Island during Hurricane Igor.

"It has been almost 72 hours since Allan Duffett, of Random Island, was washed into a river near Britannia," RCMP said Thursday in a release explaining that what had been a missing person file has changed to recovery mission on Random Island.

RCMP officers reached Random Island yesterday by Department of Fisheries and Oceans vessel and confirmed that Duffett was carried into a torrent that included water and large debris.

Police couldn't say for sure how far Duffett was carried downstream, but they said they hadn't recovered the body by late morning Thursday.

A police dog was being used Thursday to assist searchers.
