RCMP reach N.L. island cut off by Igor

Police officers travelled to Random Island, Trinity Bay, by boat to investigate a report of a man being swept to sea by Hurricane Igor.

The RCMP said that members of the Clarenville detachment along with the Clarenville Forensic Identification Section were able to get to Random Island Wednesday afternoon.

They landed at Britannia, the community where an 80-year-old man is reported to have slipped into a swollen brook and been swept into the ocean during the hurricane. Police were told the man was standing on a section of paved road that was undermined by rising water and gave away.

There are four washouts between the beginning of Random Island and Britannia, according to a police news release.

The provincial department of transportation said Wednesday morning that motor vehicle traffic would not resume to Britannia for at least a couple of days.

Two federal fisheries department members, who are assisting with the investigation, brought RCMP officers to the scene.

Police said a search and rescue helicopter is also on scene.

On Wednesday evening, the RCMP said the missing man had still not been located.
