Sackville man accused in stabbing death of Shawn Mitton to be tried in 2026

A 23-year-old Sackville man returned to court in Moncton on Tuesday to get the dates for his manslaughter trial in the death of Shawn Mitton.

Tyler Murphy was charged after the 44-year-old Mitton was fatally stabbed on March 16.

A 20-day trial by judge and jury was scheduled for Jan. 12 to Feb. 6, 2026. 

Murphy, who is still in custody, originally faced a charge of second-degree murder and was accused with his brother, Dylan Murphy. 

The charge against Dylan Murphy was dropped, and Tyler Murphy's charge reduced at a previous appearance to manslaughter.

Murphy will return to court on Nov. 21 for a pre-trial conference.  

RCMP have said that officers got a report at about 7:45 p.m. on March 16 about a stabbing outside a business on Lorne Street in Sackville. 

Police said a man, later identified as Shawn Mitton, was lying on the side of the road with stab wounds. He was taken to hospital, where he died of his injuries. 

The brothers were arrested and charged March 17. The charge against Dylan Murphy was withdrawn March 27.
