What's open, closed and happening on Family Day in N.B.

Most retailers, along with schools and city services, in New Brunswick will be closed on Monday for the Family Day holiday, but there will be lots to do.

Most retailers in New Brunswick will be closed on Monday for the Family Day holiday.

Schools, universities and colleges will also be closed. 

Some Family Day activities will be happening for people looking to spend some time outdoors or get creative.

Here's a breakdown at what's open, what's closed and what's happening on Family Day:

Retail and grocery:

  • Most Shoppers Drug Mart locations will be open, with hours depending on location. 

  • Walmart, Sobeys and Atlantic Superstore locations will be closed.

  • N.B. Liquor stores will be closed.

  • Regent Mall in Fredericton, McAllister Place in Saint John and Champlain Place in Dieppe will be closed.

  • The Saint John City Market will be closed.

Government offices, public services:

  • Saint John, Fredericton and Moncton city halls will be closed.

  • Saint John Transit, Fredericton Transit and Codiac Transpo in Moncton will not be running.

  • Service New Brunswick will be closed.

  • Monday garbage collection will happen across province, but schedules may differ.

  • All public libraries across New Brunswick will be closed.

Universities and schools:

  • Schools in New Brunswick will be closed.

  • New Brunswick Community College, Collège communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick and New Brunswick College of Craft and Design will not have classes.

  • University of New Brunswick in Saint John and Fredericton, Université de Moncton campuses and St. Thomas University will not have classes.

  • At Mount Allison University, Family Day overlaps with the university's winter reading break.

Activities:

  • PolarFest in Moncton runs all weekend, but on Monday, activities include a skating trail, sliding hill, alpaca encounters, winter activities, music, a beer garden and a community weaving project. 

  • Moncton's Inflate-a-Palooza is happening all weekend, including on Monday. It's a ticketed bouncer event happening at the Moncton Coliseum. 

  • Boyle Family Farm, just outside Moncton, will have a paid day of Family Day activities from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., including a scavenger hunt, kid-friendly lassoing and axe-throwing, pony rides and interaction with the animals. 

  • The Kings Landing Family Day walk was cancelled because of an unfavourable weather forecast.

  • The Beaverbrook Art Gallery will have Family Day activities from noon to 3 p.m., including printmaking, beaded bracelet making, a Tom Thomson-inspired collaborative collage, face painting and Vytynanka (Ukrainian folk papercutting).

  • Mactaquac Provincial Park will have Family Day activities from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., including winter equipment rentals, a community campfire, maple taffy and live music.

  • As part of Fundy Winterfest, Family Day activities will be held at the Quispamsis Q-Plex and the Westfield Golf and Country Club. Quispamsis activities include free skating and PARka for the course (an outdoor mini-golf type activity). Grand Bay-Westfield activities include live music, a scavenger hunt and a snow sculpture contest. 

  • SnowFestHiver in the Bathurst region goes all weekend, but on Monday, activities — mostly at La Promenade Waterfront — include skating and sliding if weather permits, arts and crafts, a pop-up market, an outdoor bilingual storytime and karaoke. 

  • The City of Edmundston will have Family Day activities at the Jean-Daigle Centre and the Sports Pavilion, including skating, swimming, climbing, inflatables and autographs with Edmundston Blizzard players.
