A 19-year-old man faces charges in connection with a crash a year ago that left a 17-year-old passenger dead.

Police say excessive speed and reckless driving were factors in the crash on Oct. 18, 2022, at St. Mary's Road and Guay Avenue in Winnipeg's St. Vital area.

The car hit a hydro pole around 9 p.m., police said. The passenger was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at hospital.

The 18-year-old driver (who is now 19) was rushed to hospital in serious condition.

He was recently arrested after recovering from his injuries and faces the charge of criminal negligence causing death, police said.
