A Brandon police officer has been charged with assault after the province's police watchdog, the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba, concluded its inquiry into a 2023 arrest that left a woman with a broken collarbone.

Brandon Police Service officers responded to an evening disturbance call near First Street and Cornwallis Crescent in the city's south end on Aug. 25, 2023.

They arrested a woman and brought her home, according to the IIU's report released Thursday.

On Aug. 31, the woman went to police to file a complaint, saying she had been injured during the arrest.

Police later learned that she had a broken collarbone and the IIU, the civilian-led agency charged with investigating all serious incidents involving police officers, began its probe on Sept. 26, the report states.

Const. Brett Long has been charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm. He was issued a summons on Wednesday.

The case is now before the courts.
