The City of Waterloo is helping seniors in the region get comfortable with the current GRT bus system and how it now connects with the ION LRT.

The city is hosting a Ride-a-Bus orientation session Tuesday. It's a half-day event that will see the city take a group of seniors on a bus tour to a number of key locations.

"We'll take them to places that they would be going in the city," Rick Chambers, a member of the Waterloo Age-Friendly Multi-Agency Committee, told CBC Kitchener-Waterloo.

Chambers said the purpose of this is also to educate seniors and make them aware of how to use the system.

He said an earlier session in May involving Kitchener and Cambridge seniors revealed gaps in what some seniors knew about the local transit systems.

"Many didn't realize that you didn't need to step up to a bus, the bus lowers to where you are," he said.

The event is happening Tuesday morning and starts at 9:30 a.m. at Waterloo's Wing 404 Adult Centre on Dutton Drive.

All attending seniors will get an EasyGo fare card to get them started with using the new system.

For planning reasons, participants will not be taken on any ION trains.
