The Waterloo Region District School Board has announced jeewan chanicka is no longer its director of education.

A notice went out to staff Thursday morning. A spokesperson for the school board said they had no comment when asked by CBC News about the all-staff notice.

"We thank him for his leadership and contributions and wish him all the best in his future endeavours," the notice said.

No reason was given for chanicka's departure.

CBC News reached out to chanicka through his personal website but have not received a response.

Scott Miller will serve as the board's interim director of education. In May, Miller was named associate director of business services. He has worked for the board since 1995 in other roles, including superintendent of student achievement and well-being, and associate director responsible for education services.

Jeff Pelich, president of the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) Waterloo Region, told CBC News in an email that "ETFO learned of the announcement at the same time as the system."

"We are just as surprised as everyone else and look forward to working with interim director Scott Miller," Pelich said.

Chanicka was named director of education in August 2021. The news release at the time said he had worked for 20 years as an educator and held positions at York Region District School Board, the Toronto District School Board and the Ontario Ministry of Education.

In 2019, he was named CEO of Al Rajhi Education in Dubai where he worked to develop a blueprint for a growing district of schools across the Middle East.
