Water main break closes Lancaster Street in Kitchener

Crews on scene at a water main break in Kitchener Tuesday morning said an 18-inch feeder pipe broke overnight, causing part of Lancaster Street to collapse.

A section of Lancaster Street in Kitchener was closed down Tuesday after a burst water main caused part of the road to collapse.

Crews said water was noticed on the road Monday evening and the road collapsed around 2 a.m. Tuesday.

Officials at the scene told CBC K-W an 18-inch feeder pipe broke. The feeder pipe is a significant part of the water infrastructure.

Lancaster was closed between Hillview and Hill streets, with pieces of asphalt strewn across Hillview Street from the pressure of the pipe burst.

On Twitter, city staff said water service to nearby homes was expected to be restored by midnight. 

"In order to be able to shut off the valves to fix main, Mannheim Water Plant has had to turn the water pressure down," the city tweeted to a concerned citizen. "Residents may notice some lower pressure across the city."
