After a one-day weather delay, the Ministry of Transportation has closed the Victoria Street bridge.

The closure is part of a three-phase plan to build a four-lane stretch of Highway 7, between Kitchener and Guelph. The bridge will be demolished and rebuilt as part of the project. It will remain closed until November.

Along with the bridge closure, Victoria Street between Edna Street to Bruce Street will also be closed to through traffic, but access to local businesses will be allowed.

There will be long-term ramp closures at the Highway 85 and Wellington Street exit, the Highway 7/85 southbound Edna Street off-ramp and the Bruce Street northbound on-ramp.

Detours around closure

Local traffic is asked to use detour routes on Edna, Frederick and Bruce Streets. Through traffic will use Wellington Street, Shirley Avenue and Bingemans Centre Drive.

There will be a full 24-hour closure of Conestoga Parkway at Victoria Street on the bridge's demolition date, which is tentatively scheduled for Feb. 10, weather permitting.

People can expect major delays during the closure. Conestoga Parkway traffic will be rerouted via southbound Wellington Street off-ramp and northbound Bruce Street off-ramp onto detour routes with OPP presence.
